PLACE: Uncle Harry

Filmed September 2018, North Yorkshire

My Great Uncle Harry is the oldest member of our family, and the keeper and teller of many of our shared stories.

One day I sat down with him over a pot of a tea kept warm by a patchwork pig-shaped tea-cosy, and recorded our conversation. He’s been farming for over 70 years, and his story is one of a deep connection to the land, and grief for his late wife Nora; softened by humour and the comforting memories of their time together. His laugh is a sound I’m so grateful to have recorded.

Afterwards I filmed him fettling around the farm he now shares with his son Nicholas.

Since the film has come out, Uncle Harry has been so touched by all the messages he and I have received. We’ve even spoken about the possibility of a second film!

I would love to make more films like this. Films that capture our older generations, their stories and their wisdom.

Am I doing it right?
